While many people celebrate turning 50 with spa weekends or special getaways, Caroline decided to mark the milestone in a very different way, by taking on two huge endurance challenges in 2026.

In April 2026, Caroline ran the iconic London Marathon, and in July 2026 she will tackle the demanding Lakeland 50, which is a gruelling 50-mile ultramarathon through the challenging terrain of the Lake District.

Caroline secured her London Marathon place through the ballot at her running club, Kingston Runners, while the Lakeland 50 was a personal challenge she decided to take on herself.

Originally, Caroline planned to complete both events quietly. However, after the very sad loss of her friend and fellow runner, David Howes, in March 2026, she decided to use the opportunity to raise funds for Immunodeficiency UK.

Caroline says: “David was diagnosed with Immunodeficiency 10 years ago and the organisation do a fantastic job at supporting sufferers and their families with all the help and advice they need. The charity which was very close to David’s heart and helped him and his family a lot over the years.

David also played a major role in Caroline’s own running journey, encouraging her to sign up for her first marathon, the Windermere Marathon in 2022. Fundraising in his memory therefore felt especially meaningful.

Caroline successfully completed the London Marathon in an impressive time of 4:28:08, describing it as “the most amazing experience.” Now, her focus turns to preparing for the 50-mile Lakeland challenge in July.

So far, Caroline has raised almost £2,500 for Immunodeficiency UK and hopes to continue growing the total in memory of David and in support of everyone affected by immunodeficiency.
