Deciding on named carers

To limit the chances of infection during the BMT, usually two to three people may be named as carers during the BMT process. This may be, for example, mother, father and one other. Ask your BMT nurse about the specific restrictions that apply in your transplant centre. Only these named people will be allowed in the isolation room with your child. Individual hospitals may have slightly different rules.

Juggling family life

You may have other children or dependents at home who will also require support while you are away in the hospital. Explore if there are friends and relatives who can help by providing practical help, for example doing the school run, helping with housework, cooking some meals and going shopping for you.

Your other children and close relatives may be anxious and need reassurance about what is going to happen, so share the information you have found useful with them to keep them in the loop.
