Packing for the hospital admission

Start making a list of items you and your child would like to take to the hospital. Planning ahead means that you are less likely to forget items, as things get busier towards the admission date.

For your child, pack lots of loose, cool, lightweight, easy to wash, comfortable clothes that are easy to put on and take off. Packing clothes that can be layered is a good idea, so that your child can dress according to the temperature on the ward. Casual, easy-care clothes are also recommended for carers. Ask your BMT nurse for more advice.

Personalising your BMT isolation room and passing the time in hospital

Within reason, it's good to make the isolation room as much like home as possible. Plan to take in photos of home, family, friends and pets to decorate your child's hospital room.

The hospital may have a large supply of DVDs and games you can access. You could consider taking in a games console. For young children, ask your BMT nurse about bringing in a small number of favourite toys.

Presents are allowed, and the hospital will have a list of what items are permissible on the ward and in the isolation room. For example, comics will have to be in sealed packets, and no old books will be allowed.
