Talking about the transplant with your child
Letting your child know in advance what will happen at the hospital will make them less anxious. Be honest with your child to build up trust between you, and the transplant team, about what lies ahead.
Explain what will happen in an age-appropriate way. You could use books, videos or pictures to help with this. The Anthony Nolan charity has a book that may be useful: Going to hospital for my stem cell transplant.
If you would like help talking to your child about their BMT, or need more recommendations about suitable resources, contact your BMT nurse.
Encourage your child to ask questions of both you and the medical team. Even if the question seems trivial to you, it will be important to your child. Spend time with your child reading the information material you have been given and contact your BMT nurse if you or your child have any questions.
As planning for the BMT proceeds, discuss the arrangements with your child, including who will stay with them at the hospital and how siblings and pets will be cared for. Reassure your child that they will not be alone during their hospital stay.
