Planning for taking time off work
It is likely that one of the main carers (usually mum or dad) will have to take time off work during the BMT. Talk to your employer at least three months before the BMT, so necessary arrangements be made to cover your absence. Supporting letters can be provided by your BMT nurse. It's important that your employer knows and understands about the BMT and how it will affect your work. Your employer and colleagues can be strong supporters during the BMT.

Preparing yourself financially
A child's transplant can result in extra costs for parents and carers, including travel and accommodation costs, and the cost of not being able to work. It can feel overwhelming to navigate these financial challenges, so talk about your concerns and find out what help might be available.
Consider how bills will be paid while you are in hospital with your child, and perhaps set up direct debit payments to give you peace of mind.
Here are some potential sources of financial support:
- Check your eligibility for benefits using a benefits checker, for example Tackling financial insecurity together | Turn2us for local grants, and Help with your finances | Anthony Nolan. Citizens Advice may be able to support you with navigating the benefits system.
- The Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) may be able to help out with travel costs.
- The charity Anthony Nolan offers up to £250 in financial support through its grant programme: Anthony Nolan Grant | Anthony Nolan.
- You may also be able to get help from the Family Fund.
- The Sick Children's Trust provides 'home from home' accommodation for families with sick children in hospital. Referral must come from the hospital accommodation office.
- Immunodeficiency UK offers one-off £100 hardship grants to help with the cost of access to healthcare for parents of children undergoing a BMT for their primary immunodeficiency. The application must be made by your health team: Financial Hardship Form (immunodeficiencyuk.org).
