Motability and the Blue Badge
Eligibility depends on the enhanced rate of the mobility component of the Personal Independence Payment. To be entitled to the enhanced rate of the mobility component, you will need to score at least 12 points under the two mobility activities: ‘moving around’ and ‘planning and following journeys’.
The motability scheme enables disabled people to get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair.
Exemption from road tax
If you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP you will be exempt from road tax.
You can also get a 50 per cent discount on your road tax if you receive the standard rate of the mobility component of PIP.
Effect of long stays in hospital
If you spend more than 28 days in hospital, your motability payments will stop. Unfortunately, there is also a risk that claimants could lose their car because of the inabilty to keep up payments.

To apply for or renew your Blue Badge you will need:
- the details of your current Blue Badge (if you have one)
- a digital or signed photo
- your National Insurance number
- proof of identification
- proof of residency
