QPIDS stands for quality in primary immunodeficiency services. QPIDS is an accreditation programme for primary immunodeficiency (PID) services across the UK and Ireland.

QPIDS accreditation gives you greater confidence in your PID service and assures consistent quality of care wherever the accredited service is located. For the service, it means a sense of pride in being able to show that they offer a high-quality and safe service. It also increases opportunities for investment, growth and the development of services.

How patients are involved in the QPIDS programme

The Quality in Primary Immunodeficiency Services (QPIDS) programme is designed to improve the care you receive from your immunology service—and patients play a vital role in shaping how services develop.

What is QPIDS?

QPIDS is a national quality improvement programme run by the Royal College of Physicians. Most immunology services are registered, and many are fully accredited. Accreditation means a service has been independently assessed against a set of standards and shown to provide high-quality care. This involves reviewing evidence (such as audits) and a visit from experienced clinical assessors.

How does QPIDS focus on patients?

At the heart of QPIDS are standards developed with input from a wide range of stakeholders, including patient representatives. These standards cover areas such as leadership, safety, workforce, and clinical effectiveness – but all are underpinned by a commitment to person-centred care.

Services are expected to:

  • provide clear and accessible patient information
  • actively seek and respond to patient feedback
  • ensure patients know how to raise concerns or give compliments
  • involve patients in service development.

Recent updates to the standards have also strengthened support for psychological wellbeing and improving transitions between services – both priorities highlighted by patients.

How can you get involved?

Your voice matters. Sharing your experiences helps services understand what is working well and where improvements are needed. You can:

  • provide feedback through surveys, Friends and Family Test, or PALS
  • speak directly to your care team
  • get involved as a patient representative.

You can also ask whether your service is QPIDS-accredited and how they involve patients in improvement work.

QPIDS continues to work with patient groups to shape its standards and decision-making. By sharing your views, you can help ensure services continue to improve in ways that matter most to patients.
