FAQs

Do all SCID children need to have conditioning before they have a BMT?

This all depends on the type of SCID and how tissue type compatible the donor cells are. For some children with SCID with a perfect tissue match from their brother or sister conditioning using chemotherapy may not be necessary at all if the transplant is undertaken early enough in life.

How often can you do a bone marrow transplant (BMT) for a PID?

Sometimes a BMT doesn’t “take” because the graft is rejected.  In that situation, it may be possible to consider doing another transplant. However, this is dependent on whether the original donor is suitable or whether another suitable donor can be found.  The medical condition of the patient considered for subsequent transplant has to be good

Are payments taken before tax?

Yes. For example, if you were to give £12 every month, only £9.60 would come out of your salary –  but we'd receive £12. Or if you were in the higher rate tax bracket(40%) then only £7.20 would be taken from your salary.

Historically what is the longest length of breaks between treatments that people have had before showing a decreased immunity?

In some UK centres and parts of Europe patients with secondary antibody deficiency only have their IgG over the higher risk winter months and then have 6 months off.  The choice to do this must be based on full knowledge of the patient history.
